Should my record be 33 1/3 or 45 RPM?
33 1/3 for albums, 45 for singles and for any short side you want to hit as hard as possible. We press both.
At 45 RPM more groove passes the needle each second, so the cut can be louder and hold more detail, especially at the top end. The trade is playing time: a side at 45 holds less music than the same side at 33 1/3. That is why a four track EP is often a 12 inch at 45, and a full album is almost always 33 1/3.
