Writing splits

Who wrote the song. Must total 100. 0%

Runs in your browser. Names and splits are never uploaded or saved.

How it works

01

Name the song

Title, artist and the date of the agreement. Add the release it belongs to if it has one.

02

Add the people

Writers and their shares, and optionally the master side: who owns the recording. The totals go green at exactly 100.

03

Sign and keep it

Generate the sheet, save it as a PDF or print it, and get a signature on every line. Everyone keeps a copy.

What a split sheet is, and why templates are not enough

A split sheet records who wrote a song and what share each person owns, agreed and signed before any money exists. It is the document that prevents the classic collaboration fight: everyone remembers the session differently once there are royalties to argue about.

There are two different splits worth recording. Writing splits cover the composition: the melody, the lyrics, the arrangement. Master splits cover the recording itself: who owns the actual audio being released. One person can appear in both with different shares, and often does.

Most of what you find online is a template: a blank PDF that leaves the arithmetic and the formatting to you. A generator does the checking for you. Shares must total exactly one hundred percent, every person gets a signature line automatically, and the sheet comes out clean enough to send to a manager or a label without apology.

Once the splits are agreed on paper, the natural next step is making them real: Royalty Splits at Unchained pay each collaborator their share automatically, straight from the release's earnings, off the same percentages you just wrote down.

Split sheet questions, answered

What is a split sheet?

A short document recording who wrote a song and what percentage each person owns, signed by everyone involved. It is agreed before release, while everyone still remembers the session the same way.

When should we fill one in?

The day the song is finished, or as close to it as you can manage. The further from the session, the harder the conversation gets.

What is the difference between writing splits and master splits?

Writing splits cover the composition: melody, lyrics, arrangement. Master splits cover the recording itself: who owns the audio. They are separate agreements with separate percentages, and this tool records both.

Is a split sheet legally binding?

It is a signed record of what everyone agreed, which carries real weight, but it is not a substitute for legal advice. For complex deals involving labels or publishers, have a professional look at it.

Do the percentages have to total 100?

Yes, exactly. The tool will not generate a sheet that does not add up, because a sheet that does not add up is a future argument.

Is my information uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Names, shares and song details never reach our servers, and nothing is saved when you leave the page.

Is this split sheet generator free?

Yes. Free to use, no account, nothing uploaded. It is one of a set of browser tools we build for artists and labels preparing releases.

Splits agreed. Now make them pay out automatically.

Royalty Splits at Unchained divide a release's earnings between collaborators off the percentages you set, with every share visible in each person's account.
