The finishes

Four ways to wear a colour

Solid

Opaque colour through the whole disc. The safest pick for an exact look, and the closest match to a label or artwork colour.

Smoke

A translucent colour with depth, light passes through it. Made as translucent colour at the press, and no two copies are identical.

Marbled

Colour swirled through the disc. The mix is never the same twice, so every record in the run is one of one.

Clear

Transparent vinyl with no colour at all. The record almost disappears on the platter, and printed labels carry the look.

Smoke and marbled vary from copy to copy because the mix is never identical twice. Your test pressings are where you see yours.

The sound

Does coloured vinyl sound worse?

No, not when it is pressed properly. Our pressing engineers hold that a solid colour, pressed with the right polymer mix on modern machines, is not meaningfully different from black. That position is theirs, made on their own presses.

What we do not press

Some finishes on other plants' menus are not on ours, and it is better you know before you fall for one.

Splatter

Marbled gets you the one-of-one look with colour moving through the disc.

Picture discs

Clear vinyl with full-colour printed labels carries artwork onto the record itself.

Liquid-filled vinyl

Smoke has the depth and movement without the novelty pressing trade-offs.

Two and three colour records

Marbled blends your colour against black or clear for contrast in one disc.

Colour questions

What colours can my record be?

Black, a solid colour, transparent, smoke or marbled, chosen at quote stage because the pellets go into the press with the run.

Does colour affect the sound?

A solid colour on modern presses is not meaningfully different from black. Effect finishes vary more copy to copy.

Can I press picture discs or splatter?

Not at the moment. Black, solid colours, transparent, smoke and marbled are the range we press today.
